My Story
I grew up surrounded by drinking. Watching the adults around me lose control turned me off—at first. My mom joined AA, and I saw the shame she carried, the struggle of white-knuckling her sobriety. I knew that wasn’t the path I wanted.

Then, alcohol became my reward. A drink to celebrate a great day. A drink to cope with a hard one. During the pandemic, I found myself drinking more than I wanted, slipping into a pattern I never saw coming. I’d go weeks without drinking, only to binge for several days because I had “earned it.” But what had I really earned? Chasing a fleeting high. Waking up at 3 a.m., heart racing, wondering what I had said—or done—to embarrass myself.

I knew something had to change. But how?

Then I found This Naked Mind. I learned the science of addiction—the artificial dopamine hit from that first drink, and how I spent the rest of the night chasing a feeling I could never quite catch again. I started looking at what alcohol was actually taking from me. The nights spent with friends, conversations I barely remembered. The mornings lost to hangovers. The days I spent just trying to push through, still carrying the effects of the night before.

So I’ll ask you: What is alcohol taking from you?

When I decided it was time to make a change, I realized I was thinking about drinking all the time. Is it Friday yet? Maybe I’ll start on Thursday this week… Is it 5:00 yet? I’m driving today, so no drinking—can we get home so I can get started?

It was exhausting.
​
But when I made the decision that I didn’t need alcohol in my life, everything became so much easier. No more mental negotiations, no more rules to follow, no more feeling like alcohol was in control.
Will I ever drink again? I don’t know. But I do know what alcohol does—and doesn’t—do for me. I have the knowledge and the tools to make the best decision for myself, with complete freedom.
